A Muay Thai base, finishing on the ground

Loladze’s first two wins came by TKO, one of them in only 30 seconds. Her last two ended by submission: first a guillotine choke, then an arm-triangle choke, both in the first round. Those results show that her game is no longer limited to striking. An opponent now has to account for the threat of control and submissions on the ground as well as her work on the feet.

What someone who trains three times a week can take from it

  • Strikers need a ground game too. Loladze comes from Muay Thai, yet her last two wins were chokes. Whatever an MMA fighter’s main discipline, defence, control and finishing ability on the ground matter.
  • The arm-triangle requires sound top control. You trap the head and one arm, keep the opponent’s arm against the neck, and gradually apply pressure with your shoulder. Strength alone will not make up for poor positioning.
  • The guillotine shows up in transitions. When an opponent drops their head, in a takedown attempt or a scramble, the neck is open. It’s one of the first chokes a beginner should learn, and one of the first to learn to defend.
